How did the EP come about?
This EP came around in a very relaxed and last minute way. We found out that we had the kit needed to record live music at the weekend away and that got us thinking… What would be the purpose for us recording live? How could it bless our local church?
In previous years, the church weekend away has been a marvellous landmark for us as a community, not simply a holy mountain-top experience, which can easily seem so distant from everyday life, but an opportunity for every generation to engage with what God has to say to us and let that steer where we travel next.
So this EP is a pin on the map. It’s not really about the songs that are on there. It’s about what is behind all of that music stuff. The few songs and sounds on this EP are just a window into what went on at the weekend. This EP is about remembering and celebrating what God said and did among us. It’s about remembering the call to go deeper.
The recording itself is raw and a little sketchy around the edges, but it’s God’s, it’s ours and it’s genuine.

James' story behind the song 'Unrivalled'
I began to write 'Unrivalled' during a time when I had become heavily dependent on the wrong things for a sense of fulfilment. I looked to success and got nowhere. I looked to relationships and became socially anxious. I looked to possessions and became jealous. I looked to business and became fatigued.
It felt as though there was a war over my heart and it had left me broken. As I began to recognise the reality of my situation, I also began to recognise and experience the vast, eclipsing, healing, relentless nature of God’s affection, mostly through the prayerful care and encouragement of others. There really is nothing like it.
When a few of us chatted about worship for the weekend away, people kept encouraging me to share 'Unrivalled.' I knew sharing the song and the story behind it would be like showing my scars. Yet, in a season of going deeper together, openness and vulnerability just seemed like the right thing to do.
Huge thanks to all those at Christ Church for encouraging me to go for it with this song. Particular thanks to Tom Slinger and Nick Duncombe for cradling it in it's infancy and to Chris Kipling and the worship team for helping me arrange it.
