What is Learning to Serve?

Learning to Serve is a year long discipleship course that aims to help you be an effective Christian in the 21st Century. It is dynamic and outward-looking with an emphasis on being fruitful disciples in the world and servant leaders in mission-oriented churches.

Learning to Serve operates on a day release basis and so is accessible to people from a wide range of situations. The 'day' runs from 1 to 6pm on 30 Tuesdays a year. It will provide you with practical training while you give time to serving in your local church. We aim to invest in you in terms of knowledge, practical skills and Christian character.

Who is running it?

Learning to Serve is run by Highfield Church Southampton, Above Bar Church Southampton, and Christ Church Winchester.

The scheme draws on the expertise and experience of the staff and members of participating churches, organisations such as Damaris and Moorlands College, as well as speakers from the national church scene.

The course leaders are Tim Billington, a local GP and leader of a church congregation, and Chris Halls, Associate Minister at Highfield Church.

What will it cover?

Learning to Serve covers a wide range of subjects, including:
• Bible Study
• Introduction to doctrine and theology
• Practical leadership and mission skills
• Culture, lifestyle and ethics
You will have the chance to interact, pray and worship with people of different ages and at different stages in their faith. Course members are encouraged to participate in at least one camp, houseparty or mission. Every course member will be mentored by an experienced Christian.

Who is it for?

• Anyone who is prepared to give time to serve in a local church
• Existing staff e.g. youth workers and pastoral assistants
• People taking a year out
• Early retirees
• Anyone who wants to grow as a Christian
• Church members on day release from their paid employment

What will be involved?

• Weekly day release on Tuesdays, 1-6pm
• Monthly evenings, 7.30-9.30pm
• Three 10-week terms, October to June
• A commitment to attend each week
• You will be allocated a mentor to meet with you regularly during the year

Where is it held?
The majority of sessions are at Highfield Church Centre. Some sessions are also held at Above Bar Church and Christ Church Winchester.

What will it cost?
You will need to raise £400 to cover the cost of lectures and materials. We do not want the cost of the course to prevent you from attending. If money is an issue, please contact one of the course leaders.
